It was almost a year ago that the association acknowledged the efforts of the outdoor staff from council in taking steps to beautify the streetscape along Tathra Road at the rear of the Bega Showgrounds.
The outdoor staff spent some weeks planting native grasses & grevillea ground cover, which promised to significantly improve what was a barren, unattractive welcome to the southern end of the town.
A year later & the fruits of that effort by council’s outdoor staff are visible for all to see, with both the native grasses & grevillea having taken a strong hold.
The positive impact of the vegetation on the appearance of the streetscape, in particular the rather shabby back fence of the Showground, is fantastic & like the amazing transformation to the northern entry to the town, offers a real welcoming appearance to visitors & locals alike.
The association looks forward to the improvements being continued with further reclamation & plantings on the barren & eroding roadside embankments further along Tathra Road, between Ross Street & Howard Avenue.
The association believes that the most encouraging thing about the initiative being pursued along Tathra Road is that the proposal came from the outdoor crew itself & succeeded in winning approval on the basis that it would pay for itself by reducing the cost to ratepayers of having to mow & otherwise maintain the roadside area.
The above effort mirrors the fantastic effort made in beautifying the area around Kiss' Lagoon in North Bega, albeit on a much smaller scale & is a credit to all those involved.
Imagine how fantastic our town centres across the shire would look if council directed an appropriate level of funding to street beautification, rather than squandering millions of dollars in ratepayers’ funds subsidising the development of concrete & bitumen monuments to the commercial interests of developers & major supermarkets which ultimately act to strip our communities of their character & beauty.
Anyway, Well Done again to council’s outdoor crew.
